Espresso Coffee Machines - Lease or Buy?

If you're looking to meet the cravings of your customers though investment in a new espresso coffee machine, its important to understand the differences between leasing a coffee machine and buying a coffee machine outright. Both options have their unique advantages and disadvantages. 

Leasing a coffee machine for your business comes with certain tax benefits. It is a 100% tax-allowable business expense, so you can offset it against your pre-tax profit for as long as you lease the equipment. This reduces your tax bill. If you’re registered for VAT, you can also reclaim the VAT, of course. Coffee machine leasing can be extremely flexible, with a choice to return the machine, continue the lease, or upgrade your coffee machine at the end of your lease. 

Alternatively, you can purchase your instant coffee machine outright. This allows you to pick and choose a modern coffee machine of your choice, without regular monthly payments. However, it should be noted that capital assets – which you’ve bought outright – depreciate in value, and depreciation isn’t an allowable expense for tax purposes.

Maintaining Your Espresso Machine

Depending on the machine in question, your maintenance procedure and schedule will vary. The majority of machines will have internal cleaning programs, which should be run at the end of every day. At longer intervals, the machine should be dismantled to allow for a thorough clean. 

Regular servicing - just like regular cleaning - prolongs the life of your machine, which means much better value for money and no disruption to customer satisfaction. It's also worth noting that you have a legal obligation to have any coffee machine featuring a pressure system inspected and certificated by a specialist every 12-14 months.
